About NEMPA

About the New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA)

NEMPA Logo
The New England Motor Press Association is unique among regional automotive media groups. Its members represent all six New England states, reaching one of the densest populations in all of America. Many also have national followings. These automotive writers and talk show hosts influence multi-vehicle owners looking to buy a wide range of cars and trucks to cope with the varied weather conditions of the region.

Where else would people have a desire for both a 4WD SUV and a sporty convertible? That’s why NEMPA presents both Winter Vehicle of the Year and Ragtop Ramble awards. Savvy manufacturers have turned these prestigious honors into successful advertising campaigns.

Our members work for a wide range of national publications such as Car and Driver, The Robb Report, Hemmings, Men’s Journal, and Popular Mechanics. Multiple NEMPA members are Car Gurus employees, content creators, and content managers.

NEMPA members are influencers online. Many members have significant YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok footprints, and recent posts by members have garnered hundreds of thousands of views. We’re also the founders and administrators of dozens of the largest and most active Facebook vehicle groups. At these groups, NEMPA members shape the narrative and content that group members see.

We’re also represented at the leading news publications in the country, including The New York Times. In addition, many of our members are syndicated, and their content is seen at local news publications on a weekly basis.

Members can also be heard on National Public Radio’s Car Talk as well as radio stations throughout New England, including WTIC-AM (Hartford) and WPRO (Providence), and many points in between.

The New England Motor Press Association reaches more than six million readers/listeners in the New England States and many millions more across the nation.

Driving the narrative in America’s most demanding automotive market. The New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) is a unique force in regional and national automotive media. Our members represent all six New England states, reaching one of the most densely populated and demographically influential regions in the country.

Where else do buyers demand an uncompromising 4WD SUV for the winter, and a sporty convertible for the summer coast? That dual reality is exactly why NEMPA hosts the industry’s most rigorous Winter Vehicle Testing and the iconic Ragtop Ramble. We evaluate vehicles in the exact conditions our readers, viewers, and listeners live in every day.

Leadership: The NEMPA Executive Board

The New England Motor Press Association is guided by an Executive Board composed of working automotive media professionals, digital publishers, and industry veterans. Unlike traditional administrative boards, NEMPA’s leadership team is actively embedded in the modern automotive landscape—testing vehicles weekly, managing leading independent media outlets, moderating massive digital communities, and producing content for top-tier national publications. This hands-on, multi-channel expertise ensures that NEMPA remains a dynamic, forward-thinking organization capable of bridging the gap between automakers, automotive journalists, and the modern consumer.

  • Zane Merva, President: Co-founder and publisher of GM-Trucks.com and a recognized Car Talk Expert. With over 25 years of experience evaluating vehicles, he leads NEMPA’s strategic growth, modernizes the organization’s digital footprint, and champions rigorous, real-world cold-weather testing. • John Goreham, Vice President: A mechanical engineer, expert vehicle tester, and prolific automotive influencer. He produces comprehensive reviews and market analysis for Torque News and Car Talk, while moderating some of the largest automotive communities across social media platforms. Connect with John on LinkedIn or Facebook

  • Lisa Fleming Brock, Executive Director: Bringing nearly three decades of automotive public relations experience—including corporate roles with Ford and Subaru—she manages NEMPA’s operations, strategic planning, and organizational communications. Connect with Lisa on LinkedIn

  • John “Bugsy” Lawlor: A foundational pillar of NEMPA and a legendary automotive voice from NPR’s Car Talk. Operating out of Automotion, he manages the region’s press fleet and serves as the logistical force behind NEMPA’s testing events, ensuring members have the access needed for comprehensive, year-round evaluation. A Modern, Multi-Channel Media Footprint

NEMPA is not just a legacy print organization; we are a fully integrated media network. Our members influence multi-vehicle owners through every stage of the modern buying cycle:

  • Digital & Print Authority: Our members are staff writers, editors, and contributors to the nation’s leading automotive and news publications, reaching millions of readers weekly.

  • Broadcast & Radio: From local affiliates to National Public Radio’s Car Talk, NEMPA voices are trusted automotive authorities on the airwaves across the Northeast and beyond.

  • Social & Community Leadership: NEMPA members are the modern digital vanguard. We operate massive YouTube channels, command viral reach on TikTok and Instagram, and serve as the founders and administrators of dozens of the largest, most active automotive Facebook groups on the internet.
