Sand Chrome and Elegance

Each August for the past 54 years, the aristocracy of the automobile world makes a pilgrimage to the famous golf course in search of the finest vehicles in the world. For the past three decades, Gene Ritvo, a local film maker and the official photographer of the New England Motor Press Association, has documented the famous car show and produced feature films for fans back east.

Just in time for Fathers Day, Gene Ritvo will premiere his latest edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at the Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham, Massachusetts. The film, featuring this year’s Pebble Beach marque of choice, the Aston Martin, will begin at 7:30 PM. The presentation will also showcase several New England connections, including a 1955 D-Type Jaguar, modified and raced by a Massachusetts teenager, who set a land-speed record. He will also show Chris Charlton’s restoration of a 1935 Duesenberg that took Best of Show 2007. An array of Aston Martin automobiles, provided by the Aston Martin Owners’ Club of New England, will be on display throughout the event. Look for a few surprise vehicles as well.

The Pebble Beach show began in 1950 as a small weekend of races. “Today,” Mr. Ritvo said in a recent interview, “it entails almost a full month of events”! Since the 1980’s, Gene Ritvo has used his camera to become one of the region’s most respected automobile photographers. He specializes in capturing the art and design of the finest automobiles in the world, especially those that participate in concours d’elegances. His pictures are taken from the observer’s point of view and focus on the artistic details, such as the grill, headlamp, or engine. His rare perspective and his sensitivity to the concours’ participants have allowed him privileges not afforded to many other media members, including pre-event show access and interviews with show winners. Originally his presentations featured a series of slides; however, in recent years Mr. Ritvo has upgraded to digital video technology. “Digital technology allows me to get as close as possible to what people would see if they were actually at the event.”

Mr. Ritvo’s clients include numerous museums, automobile manufacturers, publishers, and private collections. He is an active member and official photographer of the New England Motor Press Association. He has also presented slide shows and films at museums, libraries, automobile clubs, and the press.

The $10.00 admission ticket includes the film, special exhibition vehicles, and museum exhibits. Doors will open at 6:30 PM with refreshments available.

The Charles River Museum of Industry is located under the smokestack at 154 Moody Street in Waltham. The museum is open to the public on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is wheelchair
